Northern Norway Flåm Railway

This excursion started with a train journey, then a bus, then a ferry and then we ascended 846m by train. The views from all 4 were spectacular.

There is so little fjord traffic that the water surface had frozen: the boat's wake pushed water, broken ice, and air under and over the sheet ice - it looked amazing

The harbour at Flåm - and a village closed until the season starts again in May!

There had been 15 of us on the ferry, but 4 stayed in Flåm, so just 11 of us on the train up the mountain. The track took 20 years to build: 18 tunnels all cut by hand - each metre took a month to cut!

The original village of Flåm

The two horizontal lines you can see here are the train lines higher up the mountain

Northern Norway - another day

I've started to lose track of the days, but I can tell you that we went behind this door and saw this on our last full day on the ship

The captain gets the best view - but I suppose that's only fair!

Northern Norway Day 4

For my brother - toady we sailed through your very own Fjord!

For mum!  Taken as we left Brønnøsund

After Brønnøsund we took a small detour to see this mountain.  Nothing very exciting, . . .

. . .  but let me zoom in on what looks like a light coloured speck on the photo . . .

. . . and is actually a hole in the rock.  The hole is where a huge section has fallen away from the back: 175m high, 35m deep and 15m wide.  The story is that a man shot his arrow and hit a troll by mistake, but scientists reckon it was ice and water erosion when this area was under water in the last ice age - boring!

another zoom

Tonight's supper was the Captain's supper - really that meant he and some of the senior crew greeted us as we went to dinner, and we were served a glass of wine, but the desert was an ice-cream bombe - served with a flourish!

Part way through posting this we got an announcement from the information officer, and I closed all the computer pages I had opened and threw on plenty of layers - the Northern lights were 'on show' - and amazing they were too.  I took a whole load on photos with my i-phone, but they just seem to show night time.  Brian took lots with Lisa's decent camera and they have come out fantastically (possibly even better than the real thing!) but I cant show you until he downloads them from the camera when we get home, sorry.
